Longboard Siding: The Wood Look That Never Asks for Anything

Every few weeks someone stands in front of a Longboard sample in our office, runs a hand across the surface, and asks whether it is actually wood. That reaction is the entire product thesis. Longboard is extruded aluminum plank finished in powder-coated woodgrains convincing enough to fool people at arm's length, and it exists for owners and architects who want the warmth of cedar on a building without signing up for cedar's maintenance calendar. Across the Lower Mainland, where winter rain makes every organic material a commitment, that proposition has found a large and growing audience.

Extruded Aluminum Plank, Explained

Longboard planks are extruded rather than folded from sheet. Molten aluminum is pushed through a die, producing a plank with consistent wall thickness, crisp edges and integral interlocking profiles along each edge. Extrusion matters for three reasons. The planks are rigid and straight, so they hang true over long runs without the waviness sheet-formed products can show. The interlock is machined into the profile itself, giving positive engagement course to course. And the material mass takes a powder-coat finish evenly, which is where the wood illusion happens.

Planks come in multiple widths, and the system includes matching trims, corners and reveals so openings and terminations resolve cleanly rather than improvising with generic flashings.

Powder-Coated Woodgrain: How the Illusion Works

The finish is the product's signature. Powder coating is an electrostatic process: dry pigment powder is applied to the plank and then baked, fusing into a hard, continuous skin far tougher than air-dried paint. Longboard's woodgrain patterns layer tone and figure so the surface carries the visual depth of stained timber, in species-inspired ranges from light fir tones through warm cedars to dark walnut characters, alongside solid modern colours for projects that want metal to read as metal.

Two practical consequences follow. First, the finish is baked on in a factory, so its consistency and durability are of a different order than any site-applied stain; coastal UV and rain that would grey cedar in a couple of seasons leave powder-coat essentially unchanged for years. Second, the colour is the colour. You do not restain Longboard on a cycle, which is precisely the point, but it also means choosing the tone carefully at the start, since changing it later is not a weekend project.

Soffits: Where Longboard Quietly Dominates

Ask us where Longboard gets specified most and the answer surprises people: overhead. Soffit is a punishing location for wood, sheltered from cleansing rain but bathed in damp air, and it is awkward to refinish on a ladder every few years. Longboard's plank format, with matching vented profiles for airflow, delivers the warm timber ceiling look on porch roofs, entry canopies and roof overhangs with none of that upkeep. On many projects we install fibre cement or panel cladding on the walls and reserve Longboard for the soffit planes, where the woodgrain glows in evening light and the budget impact stays modest. Concealed Fastening and Clean Lines

Longboard installs with concealed fastening: each plank is screwed through its integral flange, and the next plank's interlock covers the fasteners. The visible result is an uninterrupted woodgrain surface with no nail heads, no plugs and no filled holes, which is a large part of why the material photographs so well. Concealment also protects the fastening from weather, since no penetration through the visible face ever exists.

The discipline this demands is the same one all fine cladding demands: straight substrate, consistent strapping, and attention to thermal movement. Aluminum expands and contracts with temperature, and the system's trims and gapping allowances exist to absorb that movement invisibly. Planks cut tight into trims without the specified clearance can creak or oil-can seasonally. This is installer knowledge, not homeowner burden, and it is why panel and plank systems reward crews who work with them regularly. Coastal Performance

Aluminum is close to an ideal material for this climate. It cannot rot, cannot swell, and holds no appeal for carpenter ants or woodpeckers. It is non-combustible, which matters for interface-zone properties and tight urban lots alike. Rain that would work into wood end-grain simply runs off powder-coat, and the marine air that streaks bare metals is kept off the aluminum by the baked finish. Washing the planks occasionally with water and mild soap is the entire care program.

Weaknesses exist and deserve daylight. Aluminum dents; a sharply struck plank will hold the memory, and repair means replacing the plank, which the interlock system permits but which is more involved than touching up a stained board. The material is also premium-priced, sitting well above cedar itself in upfront cost, with the payback arriving through years of skipped refinishing. And in hard rain an aluminum-clad wall or soffit is acoustically livelier than wood, a small character trait rather than a defect, but real.

Longboard, Cedar or Panel Metal?

Against real cedar siding, the comparison is honest on both sides. Cedar is a living material that ages, can be refinished into new characters, and costs less on day one; Longboard is a fixed, flawless portrait of wood that never changes and never asks for a weekend. Owners who love patina should own cedar. Owners who love the look but resent the ladder should own Longboard.

Against flat panel systems like AL13, the difference is linguistic more than qualitative: planks speak the language of traditional siding, lines and courses and rhythm, while panels speak the language of modern architecture, grids and reveals. Many of our favourite projects use both, panels on the main volumes and Longboard warming an entry or ceiling plane. On commercial siding projects, Longboard delivers wood warmth in exactly the durable, low-liability format building owners want.

Planning a Longboard Project

A little planning multiplies what this material delivers. Because the planks arrive finished, colour and grain decisions happen before ordering, and we encourage clients to view full-size samples outdoors at their own property, in morning and evening light, rather than under showroom fluorescents; woodgrain tones shift noticeably with sun angle and against the actual roof and window colours they will live beside. Orientation is the next call. Horizontal runs echo traditional siding and calm a facade, while vertical installation stretches proportions and suits tall entry volumes. Mixed schemes, horizontal walls with a vertical accent, or plank soffits over a different wall material entirely, are where the system's trim family earns its keep, keeping every transition crisp. Finally, plank layout is measured against the elevation drawings so cut ends land where trims conceal them and course lines align across openings, the same compositional discipline any premium cladding rewards.

Zero-Maintenance Wood Look, Honestly Defined

Zero maintenance overstates any exterior product slightly, so here is the accurate version: no staining, no sealing, no painting, no scheduled refinishing, ever, with occasional washing recommended and dent repair possible plank by plank if life happens to your wall. Compared with the recurring cycle a natural wood exterior demands in this climate, that is close enough to zero that the phrase has earned its currency.
